Emma Block is an emerging interdisciplinary choreographer, performer, and beadwork artist. She is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma of both Choctaw and European descent (Scottish, French, Polish, Swedish, German, and English among others). She grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Anthropology, Environmental Thought & Practice, and Dance in 2026.  In response to her extensive embodied history within European dance forms, ballet in particular, and other deeply colonial environments, Emma seeks to draw alternative understandings from Indigenous methods and decolonial practices. Through collaborative and site-specific research, structured improvisation, process-based performance, and community gatherings, her work is committed to dismantling and deconstructing whiteness, restoring Indigenous sovereignties, and revitalizing land-based ceremonies in relation to a more-than-human world. 

Emma is inspired and influenced by a whole host of humans and more-than-humans: family and friends, scholars, mentors, spirits, ancestors, land, and infinitely immaterial forces yet to be named, but no less real. She is often in conversation with the scholarship of Báyò Akómoláfé, Tyson Yunkaporta, Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen, David Abram, and Karyn Recollet, in addition to the creative works of Emily Johnson Catalyst and the poetry of Joy Harjo. She has also been greatly inspired by the work and guidance of University of Virginia faculty Katie Schetlick, Kim Brooks Mata, AB Brown, Yunina Barbour Payne, and Tiffany Lethabo King.
